![]() ![]() ![]() This is an insane time in Yung Gravy’s career: “Betty” is charting on Billboard, he’s gearing up to release an album in September, and he’s also about to hit the road with longtime friend and collaborator bbno$. Especially when it seems like “unprecedented times” are never ending, a lighthearted song can really go a long way. I loved that it was fun, upbeat music made by an equally fun and upbeat person. I’m serious, I genuinely listened to “1 Thot 2 Thot” every single day when I clocked out of work. Over the next few years, I proceeded to play Gravy’s music for everyone, get my feet stomped on by suburban frat boys at his 2019 Lollapalooza set, and reply to his Instagram stories way too often. I was immediately enthralled, rhyming “dressing” with “flexing”?! I was sold. Back in prehistoric times (2018), before TikTok even had the feature to put text on videos, there was a dance trend to Gravy’s song “Cheryl”. I first was introduced to Yung Gravy, like many other fans, through TikTok. I occasionally listen to some Tiny Meat Gang, sure, but for the most part, Yung Gravy is an outlier amongst my other frequently streamed artists. In the cluster of my music taste which is mainly rock and pop punk, Yung Gravy somehow still comes out on top. I’m a recent music school graduate (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign’s Music Technology program, to be exact), and it always baffles people when I tell them that Yung Gravy was my number one artist on Spotify, not just one year, but two. Especially with his latest hit “Betty”, there’s an undeniable quality to Gravy’s music that can’t truly be described. It could be the nostalgic samples, the hard hitting 808’s, or even his lyrics that sit in the gray area between hilarious and genius. Tori Casarella, a first-year undeclared major, said the festival helped her and her friends feel more at home on campus. There is something about Yung Gravy’s music that makes it timeless. He also boosted the school’s pride with his antics even more by starting an “H2P” chant himself, and then morphing the three-syllable rhythm into four, asking students, “What-does-that-mean?”įor many first-year students, the Panther pride at Fall Fest was more than just rowdy entertainment to blow off steam amid midterms, it was a way to feel more a part of the Pitt community. With a persona characteristic of current internet meme culture, Yung Gravy boosted Panther pride in his own way, telling the audience they were “litter than Penn State and WVU” which resulted in a “”Fuck Penn State” chant from the crowd. Yung Gravy proceeded to take off his sweatshirt to reveal a Pitt basketball jersey, a stunt that students raved over. ![]() Students cheered on each other’s backs from the front row to the food vendor trucks, trying to catch autographed Lunchables and a towel soaked with the rapper’s sweat from the stage. The crowd seemed to live for Yung Gravy’s oddity. “He brought energy, was genuinely funny and engaged with the crowd.” Yung Gravy was never one of my favorite artists, but I’ll admit the show was great,” Briggs said. Ben Briggs, a sophomore business major, said attending the festival was worth it. “When I go up on that stage just to see how things are going and I see a crowd of students just happy to watch their favorite artists 一 that’s gonna make me happy,” Anand said.Įven students who admittedly are not Yung Gravy fans found his charisma noteworthy.
